Rolex Submariner 5512 – History

The Rolex Submariner 5512 is widely regarded as one of the most important references in the evolution of the Rolex Submariner, representing the moment the model took on the form that would define it for decades.

Introduced in 1959, the reference 5512 arrived during a critical period of refinement for Rolex’s professional dive watch. While the Submariner had debuted earlier in the 1950s, it was the 5512 that established many of the design elements now considered essential to the collection. Most notably, it introduced crown guards for the first time and increased the case size to 40 mm, setting the template for all future Submariners.

Produced for approximately two decades until the late 1970s, the 5512 evolved through numerous subtle variations, making it especially appealing to collectors. Early examples featured glossy gilt dials, while later models transitioned to matte dials with printed text.

Another defining characteristic of the 5512 is its chronometer-certified movement, which distinguished it from its sister reference, the 5513. This certification is reflected on many dials by the presence of additional lines of text, often referred to as “four-line” dials.

Today, the Submariner 5512 is considered a cornerstone of vintage Rolex collecting — a reference that perfectly captures the brand’s transition from experimental tool watch to enduring icon.

Design and Aesthetic

The Submariner 5512 features the now-classic 40 mm stainless steel Oyster case, combining durability with balanced proportions. The addition of crown guards not only enhanced functionality but also gave the watch its unmistakable silhouette.

The black dial is clean and highly legible, with luminous hour markers and Mercedes-style hands designed for underwater visibility. Depending on the production period, the dial may feature either gilt printing or matte finishes, each with its own collector appeal.

A bidirectional rotating bezel with a black aluminum insert allows for tracking elapsed dive time, while the domed acrylic crystal adds to the vintage character of the watch.

The watch is typically fitted with a stainless steel Oyster bracelet, reinforcing its tool-watch origins while maintaining everyday wearability.

Movement: Rolex Calibres 1530 / 1560 / 1570

The Submariner 5512 was powered by a series of Rolex automatic movements over its production run, culminating in chronometer-certified calibres.

Key features include:

  • Automatic self-winding mechanical movement

  • Chronometer-certified accuracy (later models)

  • Robust and reliable construction

  • Central seconds for precise timekeeping

These movements helped establish the Submariner as not just a functional dive instrument, but also a highly accurate and dependable wristwatch.
