Rolex Milgauss Ref. 116400GV - Pre Owned
Origins and Development:
Launched in 1956: Rolex introduced the Milgauss to meet the demands of professionals exposed to strong electromagnetic fields. The watch was named "Milgauss," combining the French word "mille" (meaning thousand) with "gauss" (a unit of magnetic induction), indicating that it could withstand magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. This was an important innovation at a time when standard mechanical watches could become inaccurate or stop working due to magnetic interference.
Engineered for Anti-Magnetism: Rolex achieved this by introducing a Faraday cage within the case of the watch. The Faraday cage shields the movement from magnetic fields. The Milgauss also used special non-magnetic materials for its key components.
The First Model (Reference 6541): The original Milgauss reference 6541 had a distinctive appearance, featuring a rotating bezel, a honeycomb-patterned dial, and a lightning bolt-shaped seconds hand—an iconic feature that has been retained in later versions.
Evolution and Discontinuation:
1950s-1980s Development: Over time, Rolex made several refinements to the Milgauss. The reference 1019, introduced in the early 1960s, had a more conservative design with a smooth bezel, a straight seconds hand, and no rotating bezel. This model remained in production until the late 1980s.
Discontinuation in 1988: Due to relatively low demand, Rolex discontinued the Milgauss in 1988. At the time, it was not as popular as other Rolex tool watches like the Submariner or the GMT-Master.
Rebirth in 2007:
The Milgauss Returns (Reference 116400): Rolex brought back the Milgauss in 2007, catering to a renewed interest in anti-magnetic watches. The updated model retained the iconic lightning bolt-shaped seconds hand and featured modern upgrades like a Parachrom hairspring and improved materials for even greater anti-magnetic resistance.
Distinctive Features of the 2007 Milgauss:
Green Sapphire Crystal: One of the most distinctive features of the revived Milgauss is its green-tinted sapphire crystal, giving the watch a unique and easily recognizable look.
Discontinuation:
The Milgauss was discontinued entirely by Rolex in 2023 and is no longer in production
