The Origins of the Santos

• 1904: The Cartier Santos was created when Louis Cartier designed a wristwatch for his friend, Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont. Santos-Dumont needed a practical way to tell time while piloting, as pocket watches were inconvenient during flight.

• The resulting design is widely considered one of the first men’s wristwatches, blending functionality with Cartier's signature elegance.

• Its rectangular shape, exposed screws, and clean dial marked a significant departure from the round pocket watches of the era.

• The dial is silvered with a sunray-brushed finish.

• Features black Roman numerals, a hallmark of Cartier design, with blued steel sword-shaped hands.
