Hublot’s Founding and Innovation
Hublot was founded in 1980 by Italian watchmaker Carlo Crocco. His vision was to create a luxury watch with a bold, unique look that would appeal to a younger generation.
Crocco introduced the innovative concept of a rubber strap on a luxury watch with a gold case. This was groundbreaking at the time because luxury watches traditionally featured leather or metal straps. Hublot's use of rubber not only set a new trend but also matched well with the active lifestyles of its target audience.
MDM Genève Collection
MDM Genève was the name of Hublot's first collection, with "MDM" standing for "Marie-Danielle Montre" in tribute to Crocco’s wife.
The model 1521, along with other MDM Genève models, was notable for its minimalist, porthole-shaped design with visible screws on the bezel — an aesthetic choice that would become iconic for Hublot.
The 1521.2 variant featured a stainless steel case and often came with a quartz movement, appealing to those looking for a high-quality yet reliable and convenient timepiece.
Design and Features
The design of the 1521.2 was strikingly simple yet modern, with a round case, minimalist dial, and the signature rubber strap. This design language helped differentiate it from more traditional Swiss watches.
The MDM Genève 1521 was available in different materials, including gold and stainless steel, and often featured a minimalist black dial with baton hour markers.
